What is your favorite book?

Ladder of Years by Anne Tyler. I read it every year. It’s about a woman who runs away from home to reinvent herself, shucking off the weight of taking care of the world.

Who would you choose to have dinner with, dead or alive?

This is a predictable answer. My father. He died when I was young and I didn’t really get to know him. Oh, I’ve heard stories because I know his family but . . .

What is your biggest pet peeve?

Sounds so trivial but I do have Mars in Virgo. Bad grammar, bad punctuation, bad use of language. What’s so hard about an apostrophe? Yes, I am judgy when it comes to punctuation and grammar.

What would you change about yourself?

Oh, God. What wouldn’t I change is a better question. Wow, that’s going to make me look neurotic.

What is your favorite food?

Pasta of all kinds. Any old pasta done any old way. Just no fish, please!

What’s the last thing that made you smile?

Honestly, I just ran into my neighbor and we smiled. I smile a lot.

What is your most vivid memory?

The time I went to Newfoundland to see the largest meeting of whales in the world. I get terribly seasick so this other woman and I were vomiting as the boat went in circles. Just waiting and waiting to jump out of the boat. Finally, we dropped into the ocean and the whale was SOOOO big. It was like being next to a large grey bus. Not visually compelling but it was magic. And the very validation of how great it is to be alive.

What do you do to relax?

I don’t. It takes days of vacation to even come close.

What angers you most?

I get angry about so many things . . . where do I begin? Right now, hateful, fear-based reactions and values.

Ice cream or broccoli?

Ice cream. In all circumstances. Without question.

What do you do to relax or recalibrate?

I spend time on my rooftop terrace. I garden and grow vegetables and strawberries. It’s nice and grounding. Plus I love sunsets. My moment of the day.

Do you have regrets?

No. I am always looking to the future. Regrets mean looking backward and I am always much more curious about the future.

Who would you have dinner with if you could choose, dead or alive?

Barack Obama. I would love to find out what makes him tick. And maybe the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. I don’t really have heroes. I am fascinated by all people.

Your least favorite planet?

I know this answer isn’t what anyone would expect. It’s Jupiter. He’s so over the top and quite dictatorial.

What do you do for fun?

I decided I didn’t want to get Alzheimers so I took up tap dancing and joined a choir. They are both really good fun.

What is your favorite food?

Ice cream. Vanilla ice cream. Let me be really specific. Vanilla gelato.

What are you most afraid of?

Losing touch with my core self. I spend a lot of time refocussing my spiritual practice again and again to reconnect to those aspects of my inner self that somehow get lost in the process of living.

What is your favorite season?

Spring. Despite the pollen. I love it most because of its contrast to winter. Everything comes back to life, the colors start to pop, and everything is so vibrant.

Describe an important turning point in your life.

UAC 1995. A bunch of us did Michael Lutin’s Alien Follies. I was an alien version of Marilyn Monroe. Slinky dress, pushed up breasts – just green. It was a confluence of all the things I love. Dressing up, performing, being with people who love astrology as much as I do, talking astrology, enhancing my astrological knowledge. I realized I could do all these things and not give anything up.

What’s the one guiding principle at the heart of the way you live?

Oooh. I have several. Just one. Okay. Always make room for joy!

Where are you the happiest?

Hiking in the desert. Best part of it is the silence because I am such a word guy. It's a great balance for my life.

What is your most vivid memory?

I used to sail a lot. A mast crashed down two feet from where I was sitting. Two feet closer and I would have been dead.

What would you change about yourself?

I would be a fifth house Sun so I didn't work all the time and I had a personal life.

Who is your hero?

I have several. First, Tristan Jones who sailed solo around the world and wrote so eloquently about it. Turns out half of it was lies but he taught me how to write. Also Ram Dass (spiritual teacher) who was such a beacon for many who left the western academic world.

What superhero power would you choose?

To fly. So I could just soar above the world like a hawk.
